You just might find your new favorite book

Near the end of every December, I fall into a reading slump. I’ve spend the whole year getting excited about new releases and library books and writing book reviews. It makes sense that I would get a little tired of the written word.

So I usually take a small reading break over the holidays and resume my reading habit at the beginning of the new year. But this year, my desire to pick up my kindle or one of the many books that are sitting on my bookcase just didn’t come.

My slump had become serious.

But now it’s mid-February and I’ve read a few books now. I’m back to my usual self. Here are some tips for if you ever find yourself in a reading slump.

Read something totally different from what you’ve ever read before

I know this is going to sound crazy, but toward the end of January I was browsing the bookshelves at Wal Mart and I saw they had a special edition version of Ice Planet Barbarians (If you’re not familiar, it’s a sci fi romance that has taken booktok by storm).

I can’t say I’ve ever read any science fiction. And I’ve certainly never read any books about aliens. But I enjoy romance novels and I thought that something different would be exactly what I needed to get out of my slump.

Check out what’s New at the Library

I haven’t been spending much time at the local library since Covid, but I have become a member of Libby. Libby is a program that you log into with your library card. It lets you check out eBooks and audiobooks that have been purchased by your local library.

I’ve listened to countless audiobooks in the past year because it’s an easy thing to do while you work on other tasks. I love to listen to a book while I’m walking on the treadmill at the gym.

You can even search by what’s new, so I’ve found plenty of new and recent releases on the app. You just have to do a little searching.

Challenge Yourself

There are all kinds of reading challenges on the internet. The first one that comes to mind is the goodreads reading challenge where you challenge yourself to read a certain number of books during the year.

But there are other ones. Read a certain amount of books by the same author or finish every book in a certain series. I’ve found plenty of reading challenges hosted by different blogs and websites just by searching on Pinterest.

I hope these tips help you with finding a new book to read. I’m currently in the middle of two books: My Money, My Way by Kumiko Love (reading on kindle) and Reckless Girls by Rachel Hawkins (listening to the audiobook through Libby).

Getting out of a reading slump can sometimes be difficult, but if you’re a true bookworm like me, it’s always worth it in the end.
