Youtube is More Interesting than TV

Do we really need cable in 2022?

When I purchased my home back in 2019, I had to make some difficult decisions. Now that I had a mortgage, I realized that it would be better to minimize my monthly expenses.

Internet was important to me. It’s how I stayed in contact with family and friends. It’s how I ran my Etsy shop. But cable? That was a cord that I would be willing to cut.

It’s important to note that I don’t watch sports, so the FOMO of not being able to watch Sunday night football did not exist for me. As for the rest of the shows I liked, by that point I wasn’t really watching any current shows. I was watching old shows on streaming services like Netflix and Hulu.

But then when the pandemic hit in 2020, I started spending many more nights on the couch, looking for new things to watch. I forget how it happened, but I started watching Youtube.

And ever since, I’ve been having an interesting time diving into new subjects and content. And I realized that I didn’t miss having cable at all.

There are videos for everyone (on everything)

One of the cool things about Youtube is that there are so many different creators and all of their content is different. When I open the homepage I’m greeted with vlogs, tutorials, clips from tv shows, tips & tricks, travel guides.

There are videos made by individuals, groups, production studios, companies. I like that no matter what I’m looking for I can find something to watch.

Example: There were a lot of things that I had to learn when I became a homeowner. When I had to replace the cord on my weed whacker, I was nervous. But I found a video on Youtube to teach me how to do it.

Find like minded people who share your interests

As I’ve become more interested in cooking and meal prepping, I’ve turned to cooking channels and vlogs to teach me new recipes. While I originally came for the recipes, I wound up staying and subscribing for the creators and their personalities.

I like watching cooking vlogs and what I eat in a day videos because I have a lot in common with the creators. I like food and I like preparing meals at home. It’s fun to connect in the comments section with people that I have things in common with.

The content is easily accessible

Remember back in the day when you would tune in every week to watch the newest episode of your favorite show. It was so fun but then when it was over, you would have to wait a WHOLE WEEK for the next episode.

Online streaming services and Youtube have changed that. I like being able to watch an entire season at a time on Netflix and I love being able to tune in daily to check in with my favorite Youtube channels.

I store everything I want to watch in my WATCH LATER playlist so that when I have some free time later and am looking for something to watch, I have easy access to my things I want to watch list.

I know that cutting cable doesn’t work for everyone, but it’s helped me by minimizing my monthly expenses. I enjoy the free entertainment that is Youtube and I’m discovering new creators each and every day.
